[edit] Information

-- French title: "Egypte - Enquete sur la necropole des taureaux sacres" -- The Apis bulls were revered as sacred animals in Ancient Egypt and buried at Saqqara, a vast necropolis in the desert close to present-day Cairo. In 1851, the French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette discovered the underground sanctuary and under his direction, dozens of artefacts from the burial chambers were brought to light. Today, the Louvre Museum picks up where Mariette left off! Join a team of archeologists and get exclusive access to rediscover the Serapeum tomb of the Bull Apis, one of the most sacred places in Saqqara, Egypt. This story follows the traces of the strange religious traditions practiced in ancient times under the reign of the pharaohs: the incarnation of a preeminent deity of the Egyptian pantheon in a sacred animal; the procession of selecting the young bull; the rites of worship performed in the great temple of Ptah; the procession during the bringing of the mortal remains of the animal to the necropolis; as well as the crowds of pilgrims placing offerings and engraved tablets near the sarcophagus of the animal. Mariette also managed to map out a network of underground tunnels leading to other burial sites he did not have time to uncover. We have exclusive access to follow a team of archeologists, commissioned by the Louvre Museum, to pick up where Mariette left off. Through their field research, the scientists are bringing to life a lost and unknown chapter of ancient Egypt, and writing the next of the greatest adventures in the history of archaeology.
